La Cueva is the single most important bar-restaurant in Colombian literary history: since the 1950s, it was here that the Grupo de Barranquilla — Gabriel García Márquez, Álvaro Cepeda Samudio, Alejandro Obregón, Germán Vargas, and Alfonso Fuenmayor, among others — gathered to discuss literature, journalism, and art. In 2004, the Ministry of Culture declared it a national Bien de Interés Cultural (Cultural Heritage Site) for its historical value. Today it operates as a traditional coastal-cuisine restaurant, in a setting that preserves the memory of that golden era.
