Plaza La Libertad, also known as Parque de la Libertad, is the heart of the town of Candelaria, sitting right in front of the main church. This public square is the place for a genuine taste of everyday life in this small riverside town. Recently renovated, it offers a laid-back atmosphere, with benches where you can rest and take in the local architecture.
During cultural events, like the Negros Azules de Carreto dances, the plaza turns into a stage for rhythm and dance, reflecting the Afro-Colombian traditions of southern Atlántico. Visitors will find small stalls selling local flavors like bollo, a steamed corn or yuca dumpling wrapped in husk, and sweets. Tips: Visit in the morning to avoid the heat.
Bring water and explore the surrounding streets for cafés. Getting there: From Barranquilla, take a bus to Candelaria (1 hour). The plaza sits in the center of town, just steps from the bus terminal.
