Plaza Son de Negro in Santa Lucía is the epicenter of the Festival Nacional Son de Negro, a celebration honoring the Afro-Colombian dance of the same name, performed by dancers painted black and wearing flower-covered hats. The event draws thousands of visitors for a deep dive into local rhythm and dance, along with workshops, exhibits, and craftwork stalls. The plaza, right in the center of town, turns into a lively stage for parades and traditional music performances.
Food stalls around the square serve up local favorites like sancocho, a slow-simmered meat and root-vegetable stew, and bollo, a steamed corn or yuca dumpling wrapped in husk. Tips: Visit during the festival (October) for a one-of-a-kind experience. Bring a camera to capture the parades.
