The Gran Malecón del Río is Barranquilla's most important urban project in recent decades: a linear park along the Magdalena River that transformed a deteriorated industrial zone into the city's main public space. Today it's where barranquilleros walk, eat, meet and enjoy the river that gave birth to the city. If you visit Barranquilla, the Malecón is a must-stop.

What is the Gran Malecón del Río?

The Gran Malecón del Río is a linear park on the banks of the Magdalena River, in the northwestern part of Barranquilla. It was developed in phases from 2017–2018 onward and has gradually expanded with new areas and facilities. Its design restored the city's access to its historic river, from which Barranquilla had been disconnected for decades by port and industrial infrastructure.

The result is a promenade that combines recreation spaces, green areas, restaurants, viewpoints, water features, cultural facilities and exercise areas, with the Magdalena River as a backdrop.

What to see and do at the Gran Malecón?

  • River viewpoints: several points with a direct view of the Magdalena, Colombia's longest and most important river. At sunset, the sun's reflection on the water is one of the city's most impressive visual spectacles.
  • Recreation and exercise areas: sports courts, a bike path, outdoor exercise zones and spaces for children.
  • Restaurants and gastronomy: restaurants, cafés and food stalls with river views line the Malecón. From seafood and fish to ice cream and coastal fried snacks.
  • Art and culture: the space features artistic interventions, murals and sculptures as part of the park landscape.
  • Events and concerts: the Malecón is a frequent venue for cultural events, gastronomy fairs, concerts and activations during Carnival and other festive dates.
  • Cycling: the Malecón's bike lane is one of the favorites of the city's urban cyclists.

What's the best time to visit the Malecón?

  • Late afternoon to evening (5–9 pm): the most popular time. The temperature drops, the river breeze cools things down and the lighting creates a special atmosphere. This is when the Malecón is most lively with families, runners and couples.
  • Morning (6–9 am): ideal for exercise and photography, before the sun gets intense. The Malecón is quiet with plenty of soft natural light.
  • Midday: the heat can be intense; not the best time for long walks.
