Getting there

55 min from Barranquilla

The beach

A rare natural phenomenon: freshwater from the river meets the Caribbean, creating an ecosystem where sea turtles come to nest and tropical vegetation grows right down to the shore. 802 meters of beach, with river-and-sea sediment that keeps the water very calm. Local kiosks and restaurants serve fried fish with patacón while kids wade in water barely knee-deep. Ecotourism here is the real thing — locals look after the turtles and the biodiversity.
